Through My Lens: Volunteering at the 2025 Special Olympics BC Summer Games
On July 11 & 12, 2025, I volunteered as a photographer at the 2025 Special Olympics BC Summer Games, held in Prince George, British Columbia.. Over four unforgettable days, athletes from across British Columbia and the Yukon gathered to compete, celebrate, and show the world what they can do. I had the privilege of documenting some of the action on the track.
These Games served as a qualifier for the Nationals, making them a significant milestone in the journeys of these athletes. Whether sprinting the track at Masich Place Stadium or other events, each athlete radiated confidence, pride, and an unshakable drive to do their very best.
As mostly a portrait and editorial photographer, I’m seeking in-between moments: the quiet resolve, the joy after the storm, the flicker of triumph in someone’s eyes. At the Summer Games, these moments were everywhere. The raw power of “what I can do” was on full display, not just in performance, but in presence. It was powerful, human, and authentic.
What moved me most wasn’t the athleticism, though it was incredible, but the community. I witnessed camaraderie without conditions, celebration without ego, and support without pause. It was heart-warming in the purest sense.
Every time I clicked my shutter, I felt the weight of what was unfolding in front of me: people showing up for themselves and for each other. I left the venue with a full heart and newfound understanding of sportsmanship in it’s purest form.
To the athletes: thank you for allowing me to witness you in your element; you are all amazing! To the coaches, families, and volunteers: thank you for holding the space. And to anyone who’s never been to a Special Olympics event: you need to go. Witness the pride, determination, and joy the Special Olympics delivers..
